Majorca, Puerto Pollensa
As one of the first hotels in Port de Pollensa, Hotel Illa d’Or has a bit of a reputation. The hotel was founded in 1929 and was very fashionable in its heyday. Agatha Christie was a regular visitor, as was Winston Churchill, as were many other illustrious members of the 1930s elite. So modern day guests should expect nothing less than refined relaxation with a glamorous heritage to match!
This is a great place for couples who want a taste of the authentic Ballerics. Set at the end of a long, pine-shaded promenade (which gives the hotel an added air of elegance), the hotel is as close to the sea as you can possibly get. Spend the day by the pool or on the beach, then take the 15-minute stroll into the centre of Puerto de Pollensa. This is the Majorca of your imagination - nothing is as beautiful as watching the colours fade as the sun goes down.
Hotel Illa D’Or has been in the same family since it opened its doors, which is undoubtedly the reason why guests feel so at home here. Of course, the heart melting views of the Mediterranean are not bad either.
As restaurant locations go, it’s hard to beat La Terrassa. Dine on the water’s edge to get a real sense of the hotel. The Sunset Bar is the place to be if you want to taste one of the best gin and tonics on the planet!

Located in the far north of Majorca, Puerto de Pollensa found fame in the late 1930s, thanks to Agatha Christie's novel “Problem at Pollensa Bay”. As the last village before the Formentor Peninsula, it has largely been spared urbanisation, and thus remains one of the Ballerics’ most authentic places: whitewashed villas, traditional shops, and bodegas selling local produce. But that’s not all. While Puerto de Pollensa has retained much of its 1950s seaside charm, there is an element of luxury here too. Yes, colourful fishing boats bob quietly in the harbour but they are moored next to superyachts and catamarans.
The historic inland town of Pollensa is six miles away and filled with winding alleys, quaint squares and local craft shops. Here too you will feel the weight of an elegant past - Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier spent their honeymoon in nearby Formentor, while Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Charlie Chaplin, John Wayne, and a host of others were regular visitors to the region. We can’t say we are surprised - with the majestic Tramuntana mountain range on one side (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the sparkling seas of the Mediterranean on the other, we cannot think of somewhere that has so much heritage, glamour and natural beauty in one place.
