Hunting for Goose Barnacles with Local Fishermen

Michael Portillo joins local fishermen on a daring quest to collect percebes or goose barnacles, one of Portugal’s most prized delicacies. The unique crustaceans, found clinging to rocks along the Algarve’s rugged coastline, are notoriously difficult to harvest. Fishermen risk their safety, scaling treacherous cliffs and battling powerful waves to gather them from underwater crevices. This perilous process often commands high prices in markets and restaurants.

Faro: The Heart of the Algarve

While exploring the Algarve’s hidden gems, Michael Portillo took time to visit Faro, the region’s historic capital. Steeped in history, Faro is a charming city with its cobbled streets, ancient architecture, and lively cultural scene. Beyond the bustling streets of Faro, he discovers a number of unspoiled, secluded coves and quiet bays along the 125-mile stretch of coastline.

The Art of Traditional Copper Crafting

In Loulé, Michael meets a master coppersmith who creates traditional cataplana pots, a staple of Portuguese cookware. Crafted from a single sheet of copper, these pots are known for their unique lidded design, which locks in steam and enhances the flavours of dishes like seafood stews.

Silves: Tracing Portugal’s Heritage

Michael’s journey takes him to Silves, a historic city that was once the capital of the Algarve during the Moorish rule. During the 8th and 13th centuries, the Moors transformed Silves into a thriving trading centre. The city’s famous red sandstone castle, along with its narrow streets and traditional whitewashed houses shows how Moorish design shaped the area.
