Kefalonia, Skala
Kefalonia has long been heralded for its magical ability to charm all those who visit it. By far the Ionian’s most seductive island, Kefalonia is the destination of choice for those who want to enjoy a taste of authentic Greece.
The island’s legendary beauty is just one of the reasons why we have chosen Villa Costa. This adults-only, family run hotel is available exclusively in the UK to Sovereign guests, and offers you a traditional Greek stay. Set on the seafront and surrounded by landscaped gardens, fields, orchards and olive groves, Villa Costa is the idyllic Grecian getaway. This authentic retreat has just eight rooms and is the perfect choice if you are looking for a comfortable and friendly home away from home in Greece. Add that to home cooking, splendid sea views, wine tasting and weekly barbeques and you have everything it takes for a very relaxing holiday.
If you feel like venturing a little further afield, do not miss a trip to the nearby village of Skala. Made famous by Louis de Bernieres in his 1994 novel Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, if the village has risen in popularity since the book was released, it has lost none of its charm. Stroll through its streets to get to a Roman villa with original mosaic floor for a taste of history, before bedding down on one of the longest and cleanest beaches in the Ionian. But Kefalonia is not just famous for its authentic villages and lush hinterland. Potamaki Beach, just a few miles from Villa Costa is a world-renowned conservation area and one of the last nesting places for rare loggerhead turtles.
Children under the age of 16 years are not permitted at this hotel. This hotel has 8 rooms.
Greece’s cuisine is well known (not to mention well loved!) for its freshness and quality. Villa Costa’s in-house restaurant offers everything from local specialities to a more international fare.
The à la carte restaurant offers gourmet dining in al fresco surroundings. Soak up the garden views while feasting on rustic Greek cuisine, accompanied by a choice of selected wines, including local specialities. The menu features fresh salads and light snacks, as well as locally-caught fish and seafood dishes.
Don’t miss the weekly barbecue and wine tasting evenings. Taste regional Greek wines paired with hors d’oeuvres, followed by a tasty barbecue on the hotel lawns.
Open: 08:30 – 10:30, 13:00 – 15:00 and 19:30 – 21:30
Meals at Sophia’s Terrace are included for bed and breakfast and half board guests.
Drinking in the Kefalonian sea views from the comfort of your sun lounger by the pool is one of our favourite pastimes at Villa Costa. If you really want to make a splash, Mounda beach is just 5-minutes walk away, while Potamaki Beach, a stretch of totally unspoilt sandy coastline is just a few miles down the coast.
Villa Costa has a freshwater swimming pool, surrounded by a wooden deck with comfy sun loungers. Enjoy the sea views while cooling off and take a dip in the whirlpool.
There’s a long sand and shingle beach within walking distance of Villa Costa. Head several miles further to Potamaki Beach, which is famous for its endangered loggerhead turtles and has soft sands and clear, topaz waters.
With one of Kefalonia’s most beautiful beaches just minutes in one direction, an idyllic authentic village in another, plus boat trips, turtle watching and a mini train for relaxed sightseeing, there’s no shortage of things to amuse yourself with here.
Villa Costa has a tasteful reading lounge and conservatory for guests to relax in. Take a trip to nearby Potamaki Beach for a turtle-watching trip or take the mini train to sightsee around Skala. The hotel staff can arrange a variety of local boat trips for you to explore the area. Wine tasting with expert sommeliers is also available for small groups and couples.
Kefalonia is an island that lives up to its promise. Part honeypot of super yachts and sailing boats, part authentic Greece of oleander and goat bells, Kefalonia oozes charm wherever you are. The island’s northern peninsula is more fashionable but we prefer to head to the south, where life goes on much as it always has. Regardless of whether you want to don your designer shades and soak up the glitz and glamour or lose yourself in the island’s captivating coves and gin-clear waters, Kefalonia is wonderfully varied.
A devastating earthquake in 1953 wiped out much of Kefalonia’s architectural jewels. However, there are a few villages that show off their Greco-Venetian good looks with aplomb. Head to Fiskaro in the north (the only village to survive) for examples of lovely Neo-classical baroque architecture. The hinterland is amazing too - a quick viewing of the 2001 film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin will give you more than a fair idea of what to expect.
Villa Costa is found on the southeast coast of the island, just a few minutes from the pretty village of Skala. Packed full of traditional family-run tavernas and set right on a beautiful beach, it’s no wonder Skala is one of our favourite resorts in Kefalonia. Grab a seat at a sea fronted cafe, and watch the world go by.
